CYCLE ACCIDENT ADVICE
The initial shock of a cycling collision can leave you not knowing what to do. Use our step-by-step guide to ensure you stay safe in the immediate aftermath of an accident.
The following key steps are from our after accident toolkit. If you adhere to this guide immediately after an accident and in the following days after it, you will not be left at a financial loss and will be in the best posistion to recover properly from any injuries you have sustained.
When it comes to wounds, it can be easy to believe that seemingly minor scratches or bruises do not need to be assessed by a medical professional. We highly recommend that, even if you believe your injuries are only superficial, you get them checked out by a medical professional as soon as possible, so that they can provide an expert assessment and keep you safe.
If a vehicle caused the incident, you should try and take down the registration number if possible, as well as the insurance details, name and address of the person driving the vehicle. Additionally, if there are any witnesses present, you should also try to take down their details too. This is prudent, as you may find yourself in a position to pursue a claim for compensation, especially given that cyclists fall into the category of Vulnerable Road Users. Moreover, sometimes the other driver might deny your claims. Therefore, the more witnesses you have the better.
In some situations, the accident is caused by imperfections in the road. This can include potholes, badly maintained infrastructure, or spillages that cause a slip. We recommend that you take photographic evidence of anything like this that might have caused your accident, as well as the damage it may have caused to your bike. It’s a good idea generally to make sure you document and photograph any damage your bike, kit or any equipment before you get them repaired, so you can use it as evidence later. It is also a good idea to keep the receipts of any repairs you pay for following the accident.
